Pink Star Diamond Set to Fetch $60 Million at Sotheby’s Auction

The Pink Star Diamond, a rare 59.60-carat Fancy Vivid Pink gem, will be auctioned in Hong Kong on April 4th during Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels sale. Experts expect it to fetch a record-breaking $60 million.

What Makes the Pink Star Diamond So Special?

The Pink Star is the largest Internally Flawless, Fancy Vivid Pink diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). It features an oval mixed cut and intense colour saturation.

In addition, it’s classified as a Type IIa diamond—a rare grade that represents less than two percent of all gem-quality diamonds. These stones are considered the most chemically pure and are known for their exceptional transparency.

From Rough to Remarkable

De Beers mined the Pink Star in 1999. In its rough state, the diamond weighed 132.5 carats. Due to its exceptional quality, the cutting and polishing process took nearly two years.

Auction History of the Pink Star Diamond

This isn’t the first time Sotheby’s has offered the Pink Star for sale. In 2013, the diamond sold for $83 million at a Geneva auction. However, the buyer failed to complete the payment, and Sotheby’s retained ownership of the gem.

David Bennett, Chairman of Sotheby’s Jewellery Division, expressed excitement about the auction:

“At a time of rising global demand for rare coloured diamonds, I’m delighted to return this magnificent stone to the market.”

He also added, “Its size and colour surpass those of any known pink diamond in history.”
